Staff Lounge Update

As you can see, the PVM Staff Lounge has been given a complete overhaul. Not only is it designed differently, but it also contains several new features:

  • A new commenting system that's much more comprehensive than before (old comments can be found here)
  • The ability to email posts to friends
  • A site feed for use on your cell phones, PDA's, and news readers
  • The addition of 2004 staff and junior staff as contributors

If you were on staff this past year, you should have received an email that invites you to join our team of bloggers (contributors). Simply click on the link in that email and create your own Blogger account (if you don't already have one), then you'll be able to make posts and comments here as well. Try it ... it's really easy!

If you would like to remove your name from the list of contributors (and not receive email updates, etc), just let me know. Also, please be sure to let me know of any email changes so we can keep you in the loop. Thanks!

Also, if you're already listed as a "Contributor" (on the right sidebar) but don't remember how to log in or make a post, I can remind you of your Blogger username (just let me know). Thanks!

just checking to see if we can make comments without signing in...it's kind of a pain to have the sign-in page come up before you can comment

-my name's really sarah!

I agree ... but when you sign on you can choose "remember me" and then you won't have to re-sign-in over and over again. That's the beauty of cookies.

so, do you have to be a contributer (or at least have an account) in order to comment with a name?

yea, i must say, i think i'm a fan of the old way of commenting, that comes up in a new box, instead of routing you back through the blogger login and leaving you there. just a lot of hassle.

As I said before, you only have to log in once (if you choose "remember me"). FYI, though, here are the reasons why we're switching commenting systems:

1. Most other commenting systems (YACCS, Haloscan, etc) have been developed by small-time individuals or collectives. Because of that, there's a good chance they won't be around 2-3 years from now. In fact, YACCS (the system we used to use) has already been discontinued and isn't supported by the developer anymore. As long as Blogger exists, however, their comments will too.

2. Search engines cannot find comments or trackbacks from these third-party commenting systems. Blogger's comments, however, are very Internet-friendly ... each post has its own html page with comments, so all kinds of indexes, spiders, newsgroups, and search engines can find content on our page very well. If you're not a web designer than this reason probably doesn't seem that important, but it's actually huge for our site's usability.

3. Future versions of Blogger will probably support tighter integration of the comments with the rest of Blogger's infrastructure ... seeing recent comments, allowing you to search through the comments, following threads through different blogs, making comments come up on a popup window, etc.

I know ... that was a long explaination, but I just wanted to let y'all know that there are good reasons for the switch. Thanks!

Abby, I'm going to send you another email invitation to join the team of contributors. Just click on the link in that email and you will automatically be added to the list (and you'll be able to make your own posts).
